Abstract

This article examines the processes of the formation of a consumer society in South Korea from the late 1980s to the early 2000s. It analyzes the socioeconomic and institutional preconditions for the transformation of consumer behavior, including rising household incomes, changes in government economic policy, the development of the domestic market, and the impact of globalization. Particular attention is paid to structural changes in household consumer spending, as well as the transformation of everyday practices in food, leisure, education, and communications. It is shown that the emergence of a consumer society was accompanied not only by economic growth but also by profound sociocultural shifts, including the Westernization of lifestyles, the rise of symbolic consumption, and changes in social stratification.
